A mutated coronavirus has been found in UK.

A mutated variant of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV2 has been associated with recent infections in England. The question being raised is whether the mutation could affect people’s response to vaccines — and scientists say this is unlikely. The virus has undergone several mutations since it first infected humans, which scientists say is neither unexpected nor a cause for panic. A mutation means a change in the genetic sequence of the virus. In the case of SARS-CoV-2, which is an RNA virus, a mutation means a change in the sequence in which its molecules are arranged. A mutation in an RNA virus often happens when the virus makes a mistake while it is making copies of itself. Only if the mutation results in a significant change in the protein structure can the course of a disease be altered, said Prof V Ravi, retired Head of the Department of Neurovirology at NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences), Bengaluru. Dr Gagandeep Kang, Professor at Christian Medical...

DRDO achieves milestone in in quantum key technology

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Wednesday achieved a milestone in Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology that underwent maiden trials at two of its laboratories establishing highly secure communication.  The trials were conducted at Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) and Research Centre Imarat (RCI) at Hyderabad under realistic conditions.  QKD is a secure communication method that uses cryptographic protocol involving components of quantum mechanics. Developed by Bengaluru-based Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) and Defence Young Scientists' Laboratory - Quantum Technology (DYSL-QT), Mumbai, the technology enables two communicators to produce a random secret key known only to them and later it can be used to encrypt and decrypt messages. The quantum communication using time-bin QKD technology was performed during the trials and the setup demonstrated validation of detection of a third party trying to ga...

PARAM-siddhi Super Computer

PARAM-siddhi is now India’s most powerful supercomputer after beating Pratyush. It was even ranked at the 63rd position among the top 500 most powerful Supercomputers. PARAM-siddhi was built under the NSM and is to be installed in C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing’s) unit. According to some reports, PARAM-Siddhi has a computing power of 6.5 petaflops. PARAM Siddhi-AI has an Rpeak capacity of 5.267 Petaflops and Rmax capacity of 4.6 Petaflops. It was led and built on NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD architecture. The system, jointly built by the Department of Science and Technology and Ministry of Electronics and IT under the National Supercomputing Mission, was conceptualised by Pune-headquartered Centre for Development of Advanced Computing. This Artificial Intelligence-based system’s wide applications cover advanced materials, education, space, agriculture, defence and national security, computational chemistry and astrophysics, drug design and preventive healthcare systems, as ...

ISRO successfully launches EOS-01 and nine customer satellites from Sriharikota

India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, in its fifty first flight (PSLV-C49), successfully launched EOS-01 along with nine international customer satellites from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota on November 07, 2020. PSLV-C49 is the 2nd flight of PSLV in 'DL' configuration (with 2 solid strap-on motors).                                                                                   PSLV-C49 lifted-off at 1511 Hrs (IST) from the First Launch Pad of SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota . After 15 minutes and 20 seconds, EOS-01 was successfully injected into its orbit. Subsequently, nine commercial satellites were injected into their intended orbits. After separation, the two solar arrays of EOS-01 were deployed automatically and the ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network at ...

The World’s Whitest White Paint

In 2019, a team at MIT found a way to somehow deepen the color black to previously undiscovered levels of blackness. Flash-forward to this year, and the world’s whitest white, which may provide a faint glimmer of hope when it comes to making buildings more sustainable, is here. According to research led by Purdue University professor Xiulin Ruan and published in the journal Cell Reports Physical Science, the new “whitest white” is capable of reflecting about 95.5% of ultraviolet light that hits it. The breakthrough represents a notable improvement over the previously most reflective white paints, which bounced back between 80% and 90% of that light. Most white paints use titanium oxide as a paint filler, but Ruan’s research led his team to instead use finely ground calcium carbonate as a means of absorbing ultraviolet light. It is a ubiquitous natural compound present in everything from limestone and seashells to eggs and chalk. Between its reliance on such an abundant material a...

Bharti Enterprises wins bid for OneWeb for $500mA

Bharti Enterprises has won a bid to pick up a 45 per cent stake in OneWeb, a UK-based company that has proposed a mega-constellation of satellites in low earth orbit to deliver affordable wireless internet services to anywhere in the world. Bharti Enterprises will invest $500 million in OneWeb. OneWeb’s platform will help to reduce the digital divide by providing high speed, low latency broadband access to the poor and hard-to-reach rural areas. A low-earth orbit constellation is the only viable mechanism through which the ‘last billion’ can be connected. In the first phase, the company will launch 650 satellites and subsequently launch 1,980 satellites. Low orbit satellites operate 1,200 km above the Earth’s surface. OneWeb has proposed a mega-constellation of satellites in low earth orbit to deliver affordable wireless internet services to anywhere in the world. For more information check out :
